It shouldn’t come as a surprise that if you spend all day at your desk, you increase your chances of putting on a few pounds. As technology plays more of a role in our lives, this problem is only going to compound. This sedentary lifestyle doesn’t just lead to weight gain, but to hypertension, diabetes and heart disease. There is a solution, however.

One of the recent crazes is holistic health. Holistic health is about all parts of your life improving your health. It means that your life isn’t segmented. For example, people will go for a walk for 10 minutes and think that they’ve counteracted the effects of sitting down all day.

The reality is that it takes TWO HOURS to counteract the effects of sitting at a desk all day.

This is where holistic health comes in. Holistic health says that instead of doing one marathon workout to beat the effects of sitting down all day, you engage in a few simple habits throughout the day instead.

Here are 7 tips to avoid gaining weight when you spend all day at your desk.

Move Every 60 To 90 Minutes

Set a countdown timer to go off every 60 to 90 minutes. Each time the alarm sounds, get up and move, even if only for a moment. During these short breaks, you could walk around, grab a drink of water, go up and down the stairs or do some stretches.

Take Advantage Of Opportunities To Move Around More

There are many ways to do this:

  • Park your car further away from your destination and walk to the office.
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Pack your lunch and walk to a local park to eat.

Drink Fewer Calories

Now and again, you’ll need a pick-me-up from soda, coffee or tea. Research studies back this up. Water offers the best pick-me-up you can get. Whenever you find yourself feeling sheepish and tired, go and grab a large glass of water. Tiredness is the first sign of dehydration, not thirst. This way, you won’t just avoid the calories from coca cola, but you’ll be healthier as well.

Pack Your Lunch Daily

Buying lunch for restaurants or vending machines speeds up weight gain in a sedentary life. These meals are usually packed with fats, processed ingredients and sugars. Instead, bring healthy lunches that have lean protein, healthy carbs and jam packed with veggies. Not only will you save calories, but you’ll save a lot of money.

Avoid Vending Machines At All Costs

Unless it’s water, if it comes out of a vending machine, you should not be eating it! Eat nuts or fruit instead, so that you have something healthy to eat instead of grabbing a candy bar.

Dump Technology Whenever Possible

Do you ever text or email people who are in the cubicle next to you? If so, promise that you’ll never do it again. Instead, get up and see them in person.

Stand While You Work

Many offices now offer adjustable desks that allow you to stand instead of sitting down all day. This also saves you from years of lower back pain later in your life.
